About the team

This role sits within the Advanced Technical Services Team of the Infrastructure and Place Division, comprising of close to 100 highly qualified staff. Areas of expertise within the group include: Electrical Engineering, Ground Engineering, Road & Track Design, Tunnel Engineering, Signalling & Control Systems, Renewable Fuels & Energy and Bridges & Structures Engineering. The group collaborates with over 800 engineering and technical personnel across Technical Services that will be leveraging off the combined expertise and knowledge to deliver complex NSW infrastructure projects.

The opportunity

This role is accountable for the development, provision, maintenance, retention and transference of bridge and structural engineering capabilities, providing high level strategic and technical advice across all transport modes. The role will also drive value for money and innovative solutions to complex project problems, and enables the effective and efficient management of technical risk in bridge infrastructure projects across NSW.

As Director Engineering Bridges and Structures you will be expected to:

Lead, motivate, encourage, inspire and empower the development of an integrated, inclusive and engaged cohort of bridge and structures specialists with a clear focus on the delivery of outcomes and the continued development of multimodal bridge & structural engineering capabilities across the branch, agency and industry in a collaborative, inclusive environment.

  • Lead the provision of expert bridge engineering advice and support by building effective relationships and partnerships that facilitate the exchange of information, analysis and commentary, and enables the proactive resolution of issues, directly supporting positive and proactive outcomes for our customers and projects.
  • Enable and drive a collaborative, state-wide, expert bridge and structures engineering community of practice within TfNSW and promote industry engagement and participation to improve internal and private sector industry products and capabilities.
  • Drive the Bridge Engineering Team and it's responsibility for the development of technical policies, standards, specifications and guidelines to address technology and industry trends and organisational needs, drawing on Australian and international research and best practice across all modes of transport.
  • Build strong, operative, engaging and professional relationships with the relevant project teams and embedded technical resources, developing an in depth understanding of their objectives to enable the successful deployment of bridge engineering services across multimodal projects and to drive best practice and an appropriate and proactive engineering service to stakeholders.
  • Management of TfNSW technical risk in road, rail, maritime and metro bridges, structures, components and systems by providing specialist advice and solutions to clients, delivering the evaluation and assessment of structures, and approval of bridge components and systems including post-tensioning systems to ensure quality outcomes for our projects and programs.
  • Ensure delivery of contemporary, safe and innovatively designed bridge and structural engineering solutions that align with statutory and legislative requirements and actively support compliance with relevant national/international quality and safety standards.

About you

  • A respected leader in your field with excellent communication and engagement skills and a strong sense of customer orientation in order to deliver proactive, positive and appropriately scaled outcomes for the projects and programs we serve.
  • Extensive experience in the provision of bridge & structural engineering services and associated technologies, the provision of engineering and technical services, and the active management of technical risk in infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated high level leadership, people management and team development skills and experience.
  • Extensive stakeholder management and engagement expertise and experience to successfully navigate legislative and performance requirements combined with strong leadership skills to drive performance in complex politically and commercially sensitive environments.
  • A highly collaborative approach to delivering major Transport Bridges & Structures projects.
  • A four-year civil engineering degree recognised by Engineers Australia.
