The position
Operating within a dynamic and fast-paced environment, the Creative Studio
comprises the National Gallery’s publishing, image rights and sales, exhibition
design and workshop functions. This position works in the Exhibition Design section
of the National Gallery’s Creative Studio. This team is responsible for the design and
implementation of the National Gallery exhibitions and displays including the
implementation of associated brand initiatives.

This role will suit a highly organised individual who is able to work across competing
assignments and has project management experience and skills. It requires the
ability to think creatively and work collaboratively within the team and across the
National Gallery, with other staff and external stakeholders.

Ideally you will have worked in a gallery or similar cultural environment before and
have experience in developing and implementing design concepts for exhibitions.

This is a full-time, ongoing employment opportunity available within the Creative
Studio, Marketing and Engagement Portfolio.

Overview

This position works in the Exhibition Design section of the National Gallery’s Creative Studio.
This section is responsible for the design and implementation of the National Gallery
exhibitions and displays including the implementation of associated brand initiatives.

Duty Statement:
1. Develop and implement exhibition design concepts, in collaboration with curators,

conservators and exhibition staff to ensure the safe display of works of art.

2. With limited guidance, oversee the operation of specific exhibition projects and monitor

work flows to achieve the sections strategic objectives and deadlines.

3. Participate as a member of the exhibition project team and provide advice on design
matters as required.

4. Ensure effective liaison with staff at all levels, external stakeholders and other relevant
organisations to meet National Gallery objectives.

5. Liaise with and supervise external contractors and consultants undertaking tasks

associated with exhibition design and production.

6. Other duties as required commensurate with your skills and abilities.

Selection Criteria:
1. A degree in Industrial design, Interior design, Architecture or a related discipline with
experience in Vector Works, In Design and Photoshop or similar programs.

2. Experience in the design and delivery of exhibitions. Strong skills in conceptual design,

detailing, and presentation through drawings, renderings and physical models.

3. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a high performing
team, working with initiative, anticipating requirements and supporting change.

4. Well-developed oral and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to liaise
effectively and work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels, including contractors, for
the successful presentation of exhibitions.

5. Experience in budgetary control, project management skills, meeting deadlines,

prioritising, administrative experience in relation to technology and practices of an art
gallery or similar institution.

Qualifications, Certifications and Registrations

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Industrial, Interior Design, Architecture or a related
discipline is essential or equivalent relevant work experience.

WHS legislation. This is achieved by:
  • being accountable and taking ownership of health and safety matters within their
control or ability to promote a culture of health and safety within the National Gallery.

  • working with colleagues to enhance health and safety and ensure that it becomes a
part of everyday National Gallery business.
